One Room Challenge Colorful Kitchen Reveal

I did it! My One Room Challenge™ colorful kitchen remodel is finally complete. In 8 short weeks, I have turned my drab 90’s kitchen into a fun colorful space that is finally photographable. If you have followed me since we moved into this house four years ago you know I rarely photographed this room since it was not very pretty and full of fluorescent light. Today the photos a flowing as I share with you the final ORC reveal of my new colorful kitchen.

In each round, twenty design influencers are selected to take the challenge as Featured Designers, and transform a space and any blogger or Instagrammer can join as ORC Guest participants by linking their room transformation each week. The Plan

Here was the mood board I started with or at least what it morphed into. There were a few minor changes along the way but the general idea stayed the same. The plan, make a kitchen that is colorful and fun without doing a complete gut job or breaking the bank. I had to work around green countertops and old Thermofoil cabinets. In the end, I think these restraints made for a more creative design.

The Process

In case you are like me and have erased the old dated kitchen from your memory. Well, let’s take a stroll down memory lane. Scroll through the slides below to refresh your memory and see just how far we’ve come.

The Reveal

We started from the bottom and ended up here! Gone are the upper cabinets and fluorescent lighting. They have been replaced by walnut-stained butcher block, recessed LED, and gorgeous fixtures from Lights.com. 

My husband’s favorite addition is the new Wood Hood with Remote Blower. This pretty hood, that I painted my custom color, has a fan that mounts in the attic so it can clear the room of smoke and orders with barely a sound.

I, on the other hand, think I love the open shelving that allows me to display my collection of vintage pottery best. My colorful ceramics also help add to the colorful kitchen I wanted. You may notice that I didn’t use red anywhere in my design other than to scatter it about in decorative objects and art. If I change my mind on the red down the line, I can just switch it out for something new.

The new waterfall bar top and patterned tile add a modern take to the raised bar top which had a very dated feel in the old kitchen. The back of the bar was a lot of wasted real estate so I figure why not make it interesting with a fun and colorful tile. Plus the tile helps with cleaning up when dirty shoes scuff the wall when sitting.

The lover cabinets also got a boost of color with a new paint job in HGTV Home By Sherwin Williams – Aqua Reservoir and warm Amerock Winsome pulls in champagne bronze.

The upper cabinets that remained also got a makeover with a new soffit and crown molding bringing them to the ceiling, an indigo grasscloth wallpaper added to the interiors, and more Amerock Winsome pulls to tie it all together.

I also updated the faucet to a champagne bronze to match the new pulls. This Kraus Oletto Faucet is way cooler than the old dated one added in the ’90s.

While the eat-in area of the kitchen remained mostly the same I did do some small updates. The upholstery on the chairs was switched to an indigo shade and I ran the wallpaper into this area to tie it all together.

Now the yellow in the wallpaper helps bring out the yellow ceramics in the china cabinet.

Now with everything complete, I finally have the colorful kitchen I was hoping for and one I will no longer be shy to photograph.
