Its One Room Challenge time again and for me it’s been a long while. Although this will be my sixth round, its been two years since I last participate so I am raring to go. If you are new here let me explain what exactly I’m talking about.
The One Room Challenge™, currently in its twentieth season, is a widely anticipated biannual event. In each round, twenty design influencers are selected to take the challenge, as Featured Designers, and transform a space. Every Wednesday, the designers document their process while sharing their sources and professional advice over eight weekly posts. You can check out those designers below.

In addition to following along, everyone with a blog or Instagram account is welcome to join the fun as a Guest Participant by linking their own room transformations up during the six weeks. Each Thursday, the internet and social media are flooded with interior design inspiration, ideas, and encouragement. That’s where I come in.
This spring I will be renovating my back entry hall, which is our entry off the garage which we use daily. Let’s start with a little inspiration. This entry by @arseniclace is what I’d absolutely love to see when I walk in my door.
Unfortunately, what I I currently see is this. Womp Wah…
Pretty depressing, Right? This little hall got a new paint job when we moved in three years ago and I hung a few things on the wall but that’s about as far as I got. The rug by the door isn’t even very fun, so now it’s time for some love.
When thinking about the new plans for this space I wanted it to feel like an extension of our sun room. This is the entry we come through from the garage into the the space below.
With this view in mind here is my grand plan!
I am loving the idea of board and batten wainscoting up the stairs. The room is small so there won’t be much room for furniture or accessories so interest on the walls seems like the way to go.

The inspiration stairway above from Shine Your light is the look I’m thinking of. I even love the dark stair treads.
But you know me, white is not going to cut it so I’m thinking green for the wainscoting, maybe something like this.
I’ll probably end up re-casing the doors in a mission style as well since the previous owner had them full of grab bars which means now they are full of holes. Plus the mission style shown below on Thrifty Decor Chick will work better with the wainscoting than the old casings.
The walls are where I plan to bring in the coral with some gifted Tempaper Moire Dots in Coral, and yes I’m thinking coral ombre treads as well to match.
As for the floors, I would love to use a Mirth Studio wooden floor tile but I think I need to keep the porcelain so I might go the DIY route with a stencil or something. There are only about 20 tiles total on the landing so I can get more detailed than I could in a big room full of tile.
Finally lighting, my favorite subject, I’m thinking something bold, possibly red. I’d love a pagoda light but I’m not opposed to going mid-century either. Here are a few inspirations.

Because what is in there now is so, so sad anything I choose will be better.
There you have it the plan is made but as you know things sometime change as we go along so stay tuned.
Now enough talking, I got to get to work. I’m going to tackle the wainscoting first so I’ll let you know how it goes next week.

Absolutely love your idea board for that little entry! As far as the lighting, I’m really loving either the Sazerac Stitches fixture, or the Dutton Brown one. I look forward to seeing the finished area.

Thanks Jill, Sazerac Stitches is a New Orleans company and I’m from New Orleans originally so they definitely get few extra points just for that but I love their fixtures too so that may be the direction I go.

I love the bright green in your color palette mixed with that coral such a regal feel but still fresh at the same time.

Wow! So bright and colorful! Love the color combo! I was looking on Mirth Studio and noticed that they make peel and stick floor tiles in the pattern you chose…wondering how those would hold up over your existing floor.
Maggie Overby
Yes, I saw those and was hoping to go that route, I even went so far as ordering a sample. Unfortunately, they didn’t work on my tile. I’ll share the details in a later post.
Angela Rathbun
The green and coral color combo is so fresh! I love the idea of the wainscoting, and now you’ve got me thinking about what kind of love I need to give to my stairways! I can’t wait to see what you end up doing with the tiles – that inspiration is off the charts!

Thanks Angela, I’m super excited to get all the paint on the walls and see where it goes.
