One Room Challenge Laundry Room – Week One

dsc02022

Warning: lots of ugly photos in this post! You know what that means? Time for the One Room Challenge hosted by Linda of Calling It Home. During this event twenty design bloggers take on the challenge of transforming one space in just six weeks. Every Wednesday, the designers document their progress while sharing their sources and professional advice. In addition to following along, everyone with a blog, (that’s me!) is welcome to join the fun as a guest participant by linking their own room transformations to Calling It Home.ORC

This time around I am tackling our laundry room, the last room in our house to get some love. The room itself is not bad, it has a lot of storage and a lot of space but it is not very pretty or functional. Since this is the entrance we use to come into the house I’d love this room to have a fun mudroom feel and storage that makes sense.

We do have a new front load washer and dryer but no counter top or back splash above.

The laundry room also serves as pet central. We have a large pantry that serves as storage for pet supplies but has weird shelving that is not very useful for other things.

and since the cat is a self-feeder we use a very advanced system  to keep the dogs from eating all the cat food when no one is looking. This hi-tech string holds the door closed just enough so the dogs can’t fit through but the cat can.

There are also a huge number of doors in this room. The pantry doors. A door with dog door out to the backyard.

A door to the garage and to the room upstairs above the garage.

And one to the adjoining bathroom. (In this photo you should also notice the terrible fluorescent light and gross floor.)

The adjoining bathroom has received some love so I may pull some color inspiration from here.

So here is the wishlist:

  • Counter top over washer dryer
  • Decorative Backsplash
  • New Paint
  • New Lighting
  • Better use of pantry, possibly mudroom bench
  • Place to feed pets
  • Do something on the floor to cover or replace
  • Do something to make the array of doors more interesting.
  • Make it Fun!

I have my work cut out for me…

  2. That piece of string is some blogging REALNESS! I love it.
As always, I wait with bated breath to see what you do!

  3. So awesome that you have a dedicated laundry room! Can’t wait to see the backsplash that you’re considering… That string action is quite genius by the way! 🙂 P.S. I’m sitting out this round of the ORC (boo-hoo), but will be living vicariously through my favorite participants’ makeovers. Looking forward to following your makeover, Maggie!

  4. So excited to see how your space will come along! Love seeing real life “problems” getting solved with great design… Not just taking the cat food out of the room for a pretty picture 🙂

  5. We can’t wait to follow along the next 5 weeks. We know that your new laundry room will be fabulous! PD – love the high-tech string!

  6. You have a pretty nice space to start with so I can’t wait to see how you spice it up! My laundry room is in the unfinished part of our basement. Very not glamorous!
