Moody Home Office – Reveal

Moody Home Office - Reveal

Welcome to my Moody Home Office One Room Challange reveal! It’s been busy 8 weeks of painting, sewing and furniture refinishing but we are finally to the finish line. I’ve worked so hard to get this project finish so I hope you love the results because I certainly do.

If you are here for the first time and are completely confused, The One Room Challengeâ„¢ is a biannual interior design blog and Instagram event. In each round, twenty design influencers are selected to take the challenge as Featured Designers, and transform a space. Any blogger or Instagrammer can also join as a ORC Guest participant by linking their room transformation each week. Every Tuesday, the designers document their process while sharing their sources and professional advice over eight weekly posts.

I will update you on the progress and keep you up to date each week.

The Sponsors

Before we discuss this week’s progress I want to shout out to my One Room Challenge sponsors who will be gifting projects to help complete this project. I’ll be working with Comfort Works on a slipcover for the Friheten Ikea sofa, a mural from Photowall, cabinet hardware from Amerock, and art from Urban Garden Prints.

The Before

Moody Home Office - Reveal

When we bought our house in 2017 the room that would become my husband’s home office was pretty basic. While it had great built-ins and wood floors overall it was pretty bland and the yellow color was a little dated.

At the time we made some changes that were purely cosmetic. My husband chose a steel gray color which worked well with the furniture pieces we already had.

The changes we made were minimal and worked for a while but 4 years later it was time to give it a real makeover. When my husband gave me full reign to give it a new look, I jumped at the chance.

The previous photo is from the original styling right after we moved into the house. The gallery below shows the real-life before shots right before I began this One Room Challenge.

While the grey was fine you know I’m one for more color so I was ready for a change.

The Plan

This go-round we are taking things in a masculine but colorful direction. I wanted deep rich color on the built-ins and a beautiful wall mural that would look vintage. For the furniture, I wanted a luxurious look with gold accents and lush textures. The built-ins we loved from the beginning will house a full collection of treasured items and books, The hope was for a man’s space with a little curation but not too fussy.

The After

Moody Home Office - Reveal

For the last 8 weeks, I have been slaving away on this moody office transformation. I did have an electrician come in to add some recessed lighting but otherwise, this project has been all me. I’m pretty proud of what I have been able to accomplish in this room in such a short time. The transformation seems huge but the fact is I did not buy a single piece of new furniture.

The sofa got a new Comfort Works Snug Fit Slipcover and I reupholstered the ottomans in a Jamil Natural leopard fabric to give them a whole new look. That meant a big impact with a much smaller budget.

The built-ins we liked when we bought the house are now loved with a moody paint job in Hunt Club By Sherwin Williams. The deep green color feels rich against the gold accent of the Amerock Stature in Champagne Bronze cabinet pulls.

To top them off I lined the now green built-ins with Scott Living Textured Abstract Peel and Stick Wallpaper to set off my husband’s books and collections.

Where we once had lots of framed art on the wall, we now have walls that are art with the Photowall Tangled Jungle mural in black and white.  This large jungle mural gives the room some depth and some interest in the walls.

The critters seem to like the new jungle too, but then again Blanche and Daisy are pretty down to sleep on any sofa.

My old Ikea console also got a makeover with a new coat of Fired Brick by Sherwin Williams and the addition of Gigi O’verlay and 6″ Gold Metal Legs.

I’m very proud of how my new wall-to-wall curtains created with a double width of velvet Ikea Sanela curtains hung on a ceiling track turned out. I made these curtains more luxurious by adding a velvet curtain trim but they will also be very functional for privacy when this room needs to double as a guest room.

Finally, as the ultimate signal that the room is now complete “Fat Badger,” my husband’s “fine” piece of vintage taxidermy returned to his prominent position.

Looking Back

Together all these changes have created a more colorful space that still retains a masculine feel which means I’m happy and my husband is happy in a space we can both enjoy.

There is not much I would you do differently except maybe choosing a vintage rug over a new one. I had a vintage rug I wanted to use in this space but it was too dark for the room. I ended up buying a new lighter rug but that may be something I can add later if I am ready for a change.

My main advice for someone considering a more cosmetic remodel like this is to shop your home. Many items can be restored, restyled, or repurposed to give a space a whole new look.

I’m so glad we made it to the end together so I could finally share with you the Spring 2022 One Room Challenge Moody Home Office reveal!

  1. Maggie the room is beyond fabulous! You should feel so proud of all you have created! Lucky hubby!

  2. Incredible space and changes! you have a gift for combining colors and patterns. SO much work you did! but what a pay off. I’m over the moon for the art and heavy drapes and animal print and coral color used with green.
