While taking a walk recently I ran across the fattest acorns from what I am told is a Black Oak tree. I collected several handfuls and took them home to ponder a way to use them for my Thanksgiving table. After a bit of hunting, I ran across some beautifully colored felt balls that perfectly matched my dining room so I decided on a felt acorn DIY. This project is so easy you will want to rush out and hunt some acorns to make some for yourself. Let’s take a look.
Materials
(includes affiliate links)
- Acorns (the larger the better)
- Felt balls (match ball size to the size of the acorns you’ve gathered)
- Drill
- Twine
- Scissors
- Glue gun
How to Construct
- Remove the acorn tops from the acorn. We will not be using the acorns themselves only the tops.
2. Sort your felt balls into pairs of your favorite colors.
3. Using a drill, drill a hole through the top of the acorn cap. I found it easier to drill from the inside out.
4. Cut a piece of twine 12″ long.
5. Thread one end of the twine through the hole in the top of the acorn leaving about a 1/2″ tail inside the acorn cap.
6. Apply a generous amount of hot glue into the acorn cap.
7. Insert the felt ball into the acorn cap pressing it into the hot glue.
8. Repeat the process at the other end of the twine
9. Tie the center of the twine into a bow.
10. Enjoy!
The Felt Acorn
I used my Felt Acorn DIY as part of my place cards for my Thanksgiving table but I also hung them from branches in my centerpiece and laid them about the tablescape. They work so well with my dining room decor but I can also see them being a cute addition to my Christmas tree. They are so easy to make, I may need them for all occasions.
