- Small saw
- Utility knife
- Scissors
- Hot Glue Gun
- Spray Paint
Selecting Pinecones
When hunting your pinecones use your paper mache eggs as a guide. You want the widest part of the pinecone to be just larger that the widest part of the egg. Look for pinecones that are still tight at the top, not bloomed out. You can see the difference in the photo below.
How To
1. Using a utility knife, cut eggs in half at the widest part of the egg.
2. Using a small saw, cut the top off of a pinecone that matches the size of your egg.
3. You will want what is left to look like a flat flower so you may need to cut off additional pine scales to get the bottom even.
4. Hot glue pinecone top to egg bottom. You will have to hold it in place until the glue dries. Don’t worry if the edge is messy we will cover that in the next step.
5. Cut enough pine scales to glue all the way around the egg short to about 1/2″. Now glue scales around the base of the pinecone top with the flat edge up. This will create a scalloped edge at the bottom of the cone that looks like an acorn top.
6. If your pinecone does not already have a stem you can add one using hot glue and a piece of stick from the yard. Just add a dab of glue to the center of your pinecone top and glue the stick in place.
Paint
Once you’ve completed your collection of acorns it is time for paint. I used a gold metallic spray paint bit any combination of colors would work. Just be sure you get the acorns from every angle.
Now your DIY Pinecone Acorns are ready for display. I think these are a great addition to any fall decor.
I’m planning to use mine in my Thanksgiving tablescape so stay tuned for the full table setting soon.
