Craft rooms tend to collect quite a few bits and baubles and over time these things begin to pile up. My crafting and sewing room is no exception. For years the closet in this room has been a hodge podge of shelving and mismatched containers. This system wasted space and was not very practical. Recently I finally got fed up and decide it was time for a major craft room closet clean-out and iorganization.
Before
Before I could get things organized I hade to clear the closet out.
And things got way worse before they got better.
Shelving
The closet before contained storage solutions more suited to hanging clothes so I had added some small shelves for storage but these did not give me the right size storage and wasted a lot of space. To solve this problem I decide to remove the hanging racks and add more adjustable shelving that I could position just as I needed them.
The original center tower uses a simple inexpensive track system with clips to hold wooden shelves (affiliate links.) Since we have these type shelves in all the closets in the house and have plenty of unused shelves so the addition of a few tracks was a pretty easy solution. I added a strip of plywood to the drywall to attach one set of tracks and I was able to attached the opposite set directly to the solid wood center tower.
While everything was out I also added some fun Family of Cranes Tempaper to the back walls (you may remember this which was leftover from the guest bathroom.) Then the shelves were ready to be installed.
Storage
Now that I had more appropriate shelving it was time for the organization. I set out to see what was available in the way of storage boxes. I chose clear storage in sizes that would leave no waste on the shelves and would fit the different size items I needed to contain.
Here are a few I selected.
Organization
Once I had my storage containers, I sorted all my materials by like items. I then chose the best storage boxes for each group of items. Each box got a label so I could easily find the type of items inside. The clear boxes also help in finding the right items for my projects.
I also decided to keep one hanging rack in place to change my larger quantities of fabric on hangers. You can see below what a big difference there is in the before and after.
Nothing makes me happier than looking at this newly organized craft room closet.
Loving my new space
So happy in fact that went through all of the drawers in my sewing table and sewing bench and organized them too. Now I have craft room closet organization as well as sewing organization. I have been using this newly organized space for a few weeks now and the new organization has made it easier to find items and easier to put them away. Hopefully, that means I won’t need to do another big craft and sewing clean-out for quite a while.
Janice

Love seeing your projects!
