Welcome to week five! We are more than halfway through the Spring 2022 One Room Challenge™ and this week I am going for the gold. In the last few weeks, you have seen a lot of green going in. From here on out, I will be layering in the color as I head to the completion of my husband’s moody home office.
If you are here for the first time and are completely confused, The One Room Challenge™ is a biannual interior design blog and Instagram event. In each round, twenty design influencers are selected to take the challenge as Featured Designers, and transform a space. Any blogger or Instagrammer can also join as a ORC Guest participant by linking their room transformation each week. Every Tuesday, the designers document their process while sharing their sources and professional advice over eight weekly posts.
Each week I will update you on the progress and keep you up to date here.

The Sponsors
Before we discuss this week’s progress I want to give a big shout-out to my One Room Challenge sponsors who will be gifting projects to help complete this project. I’ll be working with Comfort Works on a slipcover for the Friheten Ikea sofa, a mural from Photowall, cabinet hardware from Amerock, and art from Urban Garden Prints.
The Plan
As a reminder let’s have a look at what the goal is and what I originally had in mind.
The Rug
Last week you got a glimpse of the new rug but I didn’t tell you much about it. Locally we have a wholesale carpet warehouse that gets truckloads of one-off rugs. The rugs are high quality and are a great price but you have to go often to get lucky. I was looking at a few rug options online but I decided to go by one last time before I placed my order. I got lucky! This beautiful 8×10 rug cost me just $339 and I had it in my room the same day.
This rug will be what I call my “color story.” I will use all colors in the rug to help me choose the accent pieces for the room. This week I working with a few items that will bring out the golden tones in the rug, starting with the drapes.
The Drapes
If you remember, This office doubles as a guest room, and occasionally the french doors that open out into the sunroom need to be covered. My goal was to have floor to ceiling curtains that would cover the entire wall when closed.
I originally order some beautiful Amber double-width velvet drapes on Amazon (affiliate link.) The drapes were beautiful and of great quality but they were not the right color. They were brownish-gold and I wanted a more yellow-gold hue
That’s when I remembered that the Ikea Sanela curtains came in gold. I ended up buying two pairs and seaming each pair together to create my own double width drapes at half of the cost.
I saves so much I decided to splurge on a 3.5″ Green Velvet Trim to dress them up. Hopefully, this arrives this week so I can get it sewn on in time for the reveal.
For the wall-to-wall curtain look, I decided on a Ceiling Track for Curtains (affiliate link.) This allows the curtains to pull fully closed with no obstacles creating a full wall of curtains.
The Art
For this room, I knew I would not be doing a lot of art. The Tangled Jungle mural makes a bold statement so it doesn’t need art, but I wanted to add color to one of the walls. I knew could get away with one large piece as long as it was bold enough not to compete with the mural.
Once I had made a final decision on the drapes I know immediately that this Golden Seven print from Urban Garden Prints was just the piece of art I needed. The print arrived on heavy paper with a beautiful matt finish so I decided to have it dry mounted so I could frame it without glass. Dry mounting flattens the artwork and permanently adheres it onto a stiff backing board, in my case foam core. They do this using adhesive and a vacuum press but it is permanent so it should not be used for fine art or limited edition pieces. Can be done at any frame shop including places like Micheal’s and Hobby Lobby.
Once I had a stiff canvas I could then move on to framing. Since I chose a 24″x36″ print this could have gotten very expensive. I lucked out finding a deep Ikea Ribba frame for just $23 that complimented the print perfectly.
That get’s us a few steps closer to revealing this moody home office makeover. Hopefully, the few items left on order arrive so it can be everything I’m hoping it will be.
