It’s that time of year again, time for the Spring One Room Challenge™. This spring I am planning to transform my husband’s home office…at his request! That’s right he gave me free rein to do whatever I like to the space. Well, that’s what he said anyway. We’ll see how that goes moving forward. Don’t worry he’s seen the plan, it will be a masculine and moody home office so for now he’s game.
If you are here for the first time and are completely confused, The One Room Challenge™ is a biannual interior design blog and Instagram event. In each round, twenty design influencers are selected to take the challenge as Featured Designers, and transform a space. Any blogger or Instagrammer can also join as a ORC Guest participant by linking their room transformation each week. Every Tuesday, the designers document their process while sharing their sources and professional advice over eight weekly posts.
Each week I will update you on the progress and keep you up to date here.
WEEK 1 (you are here) / WEEK 2 / WEEK 3 / WEEK 4 / WEEK 5 / WEEK 6 / WEEK 7 / WEEK 8

The Room
Let’s start with what it looked like when we moved into the house. Yellow walls, white trim, and pretty bland.
We did a minor cosmetic update but otherwise, most of the decor came from his office at the rental house. Which prior to that was in his office in our house in Germany. (Oh my, pardon the photos in the Germany post, it was my first year of blogging.)
The room is fine as it is now but the rug and furnishings are a little worse for wear and the grey walls (my husband’s pick) are a little drab for me. This go-round we are taking things in a masculine but colorful direction.
The Inspiration
Let’s take a look at what I mean by moody masculine spaces.
Deep rich color on the built-ins. I’m thinking of dark green or blue.
A beautiful wall mural that feels vintage like a jungle scape or lithograph.
Plush furniture with a texture like velvets.
Dark trim to accentuate the wall murals
And a full collection of treasured items and books on display.
A man’s space with a little curation but not too fussy.
The Plan
As I said, the main plan so far is to bring in more color on the built-ins, on the sofa, and on the rug. These will stand out against a beautiful black and white tropical mural. But, as with most of my One Room Challenge projects, my plans tend to stay a little fluid right up until the end. I do have a few constants that I have already confirmed thanks to some amazing companies who have agreed to gift items to help complete this space.
I’ll be working with Comfort Works to update my Ikea Friheten sleeper sofa with a new snug fit slipcover. You may remember I have an orange Comfort Works slipcover from a while back. It has been a great option for other rooms in our home but this time I think I need to go for a richer velvet. They offer so many amazing colors and fabrics this one was a big decision.
I will also be working with Photowall to add this amazing Tangled Jungle wall mural in black and white. I always love the way a bold color pops against black and white.
And finally, what bold-colored built-in is complete without some beautiful jewels? I’ll be partnering with Amerock hardware to dress my built-ins up with their Appoint hardware collection in Champaign bronze.
Now you know the plans, let the games begin! I hope you will follow along each week as I complete this space. Next week I’ll be sharing my full To-DO list, yikes, and I progress I make this week.
Wish me luck!

First of all, love the moodboard and inspiration images. BUT holy moly, I didn’t know you could get slipcovers made to fit specific sofas!

Thank you, and the slipcovers are amazing, I’ll share more on them this week.
