I’ve shared a few views of this update on Instagram but not a full post so I thought I’d share. This is one of the projects I worked on while I was taking my blogging break. Yes, if a blogger does a project and doesn’t blog about it it did still happen. The project I’m referring to is my update of my daughter’s old room.
You may remember the first rendition of this room when we moved into the house a few years ago.
My daughter left for college in 2018 but spent the first year living in the dorm so this room stayed pretty much the same. Later, however, she moved into her first apartment so I let her take several pieces of furniture from her old room to help furnish it. Now I had a half-empty room so I figured it was the perfect time to get rid of the old Berber carpet which was a little worse for wear. At the time I was lucky enough to find a SmartCore Luxury Vinyl plank flooring that was being discontinued so I got a huge deal with all the flooring being close to 80% off. I have used this type of flooring in dozens of my projects at work and love how versatile it is. The discontinued plank I used is called Cottage Oak, the closest replacement is the Talbot Oak which has a little more color variation between planks but there are dozens of colors available.
This room is huge, more apartment-sized than a bedroom since it is over a 3 car garage. So I worked in sections so I didn’t have to move all the furniture downstairs. I moved all the furniture to one side and then moved back to the other side as sections of the new floor were laid.
Our Dachshund Daisy helped, she especially enjoyed burrowing through the rolls of carpet.
This is not a tutorial on laying Vinyl Plank flooring so I won’t go into that but I will say it is a very easy DIY project as it requires no adhesive or special tools. This huge space on took about three days to lay working by myself. Much of the time was spent going up and down the stairs to make saw cuts but if you want to get fancy or have a lot of area to cover you can get an Vinyl Cutter. (affiliate link)
What a difference! Clean, smooth floors that are easy to clean and completely water proof. Perfect for pets, particularly if you have a rotten weenie like Daisy.
Now it is ready to get put back together. My daughter took her bed and vanity, the side chair and several pieces of wall art and a few accessories. I knew I would keep the Valspar Mosaic Pink on the walls since it was just recently painted but otherwise the canvas was pretty blank, so I headed to Homegoods for some bedding inspiration and came home with about fifteen through pillows and plum colored sheets that did just the trick.
The bed I replaced with THIS budget friendly option (affiliate link) and a new mattress from a local mattress factory.
The blue velvet sofa was just a slipcover so it went back to it’s original neutral color, don’t worry the slipcover is tucked away in case the blue is needed again.
The side chair I moved from the living room and the DIY coffee table got cut down to a rectangle to fit the new space.
Now we have a perfect place that is comfortable for our guests, an out-of-the-way place to get your Playstation time in, and even a spot for a workout. Maybe we should rent it out to pay some of that college tuition…
