Thrift Score Thursday – No. 136

DSC02868

Happy #ThriftScoreThursday everyone! This week I want to talk about one of my favorite things to buy second-hand… ART. Whether you find the weekend project of a no name artist or a hidden treasure you can always count on finding something that is one of a kind. This month I wanted to share some photography I fell in love with at one of my local second-hand shops.

Actually, I fell in love with a whole box of photos by the same photographer months ago. They were not a bargain but I thought the price was fair for such beautiful work, the only problem was the store was cash only and I was fresh out. I passed them that day only to find them still there months later and the price drastically reduced. Originally I was only going to buy one but with the priced drop I decided to buy two. One for me and one as a gift.

DSC02870

The photographer’s name is Charlotte Oakley out of Jacksonville, FL. I know this because of the stamps on the back, not because Charlotte is famous. I looked but I couldn’t find any information on Charlotte at all.  The writing on the back of the photos dates them to 1957. They were shown in an exhibit that year and again in 1962.

DSC02872

The woman is titled “Unpoken Words”

DSC02873

And the man “Vaquero”- cowboy in Spanish.

I love these two! There were a few others I would have loved to have but let’s be honest I have to pace myself or I will be out of wall space.

Now on to your finds…

But first, if you are new here, let me explain just what #ThriftScoreThursday is.  We want you to participate! Hit up your local thrift stores, craigslist, yard sales, estate sales, side of the road, anything! Thrifty doesn’t necessarily mean from a thrift store. We want to see your good deals, wacky finds and treasures and how you style them in your home.

Don’t feel like you need to save those finds for Thursdays! Yes, features are shared on our blogs once a month and Instagram weekly on Thursdays, but we’re all checking in on (and using!) the hashtag all week long. So, when you see/find it, feel free to share it!  And we love it when you tag your friends to play along, too!

The first Thursday of each month, Brynne from The Gathered Home, Cassie from Cassie Bustamante and I will pick our favorite thrift scores to feature. So please note that by linking up with #ThriftScoreThursday, you are giving us permission to share your finds via social media or on our blogs.

Now, in honor of my new art I decided this week to focus on some of your art finds.

jmedecor  Shared her favorite detail in her recent bathroom redo. This original painting scored at a thrift store. “I knew I needed a bold piece of art for this wall. I scoured through my personal collection, pieces elsewhere in the house, and I had nothing. Then later that week I was out sourcing at my some of my usual spots when my eye caught a painting from across the room. In that moment I knew it was THE PIECE. I bought it, took it home, and hung it immediately. It still is THE PIECE, and this is one of many reasons I love to thrift; you never know what treasure you may find.” Me too jmedecor!!!

Thrift Score Thursday No. 135

img_9061

It’s #ThriftScoreThursday everyone and today I wanted to share my diamond in the rough, and when I say rough, I mean really rough. While hunting for chairs I ran across this pile of rugs in a pretty gritty thrift/consignment store not too far from my house. I normally shy away from thrift store rugs just because you never know where they’ve been and cleaning them can be expensive. But every now and then I run across a really nice quality rug that I know, even with the cost of a professional cleaning, is a really good deal.

img_9062

So when I ran across this pile and spied the tightly knotted pink and blue rug on top I had to check it out. I was excited to see it had the original tags on it with all the information I needed to get a better idea of what I was buying. The labels are sewn on rather than glued and the company label is woven rather than printed like newer rugs from this company. I am guessing they are 50’s era from this and the back story that they came out of the seller’s great aunts house but that is only a guess.

img_9067 img_9068

So I went home and did some research and this is the interesting story I found.

Rug Story

In 1928, history was made as American retailer and textile manufacturer Marshall Field built a loom capable of recreating the detailed craftsmanship and luxurious look of a hand-woven rug. From the moment the first Karastan rug came off the loom (2:02 p.m., April 8, 1928 to be exact), our name became synonymous with elegant machine-made rugs that rivaled their handmade counterparts.

So far advanced was Marshall Field’s new manufacturing process that the trade press referred to the first Karastan rugs as “Mystery Rugs.” To share the “mystery” of these rugs with the public, Karastan created a large version of its Kirman pattern for the 1933-34 World’s Fair in Chicago. But instead of putting it on display so visitors could simply admire its beauty, Karastan did the unthinkable. We invited the world to walk on it. And so the world did!

More than 5 million people left their footprints, spills and ground-in food stains all over the rug. Then it was time for cleanup. We cleaned half the rug so people could see how well our rugs recover. The rug still exists in the same state today- one side almost unrecognizably filthy, while the other has been returned to its original beauty and luster.

wonder-rug_2

To prove that the demonstration was no fluke, we did it again. This time more than 9 million visitors walked on our rugs at the New York World’s Trade Fair of 1939-40 before half the rug was returned to its original condition. Thus the public was baffled again and our rugs became known as “The Wonder Rugs of America”.

Karastan.com

I wasn’t any farther ahead on dating the rugs but this story got me excited. After heading back for a second look I decided to make the purchase in hopes of achieving the same results with my cleaning, although I admit mine was not nearly as filthy.

With the help of my discerning assistant who was willing to lug rugs on his lunch break of course.

img_9063

But before I was done there was one more surprise…At the bottom of the pile was a second identical rug. Everyone knows you get a better deal if you buy them both, so I did!

Here they are laid out at the cleaners. They were pretty impressed with my thrift store find of two beautiful  9’x12′ rugs for just $175 each.

img_9064

On a side note, I also wrote to Karastan who still manufactures rugs today to see if they could give me some background on my purchase. They were more than willing and are checking their archives to see if they can date the rugs. I’ll update you if I find anything out.

Now let’s see what you guys have been shopping for.

Even though jmwearing  has taken it slow thrifting over the holidays doesn’t mean she doesn’t have some amazing finds to share. Her guest bedroom features some of her favorite thrift finds – the bird leg pot, elephant rattan basket, metal bust and mid century modern end tables. Pretty fabulous!

theeventmaker finally found time to finish her Chinese Chippendale update with help of #amyhoward lacquer and that bad-ass classic animal print velvet. Love that velvet and am twice as jealous since she has another matching chair -gorgeous x 2!

She found this massive vintage mirror at a run down Salvation Army store literally a day after I deciding she needed a large mirror for a dark living room. I’m sure you can guess why I picked this shot from golddustgoods, paint by numbers are the best and the rest of these goodies ain’t bad either.

jmwearing finally finished her shelfie and it’s amazing! Even more amazing, everything pictured is thrifted. My kind of girl!

Thrifted finds work well for Christmas too, Refresheddes proves that with the addition of these festive berries. Then again anything would look festive next to that fabulous lamp.

Ever had a thrift find lead to a whoooole lot of rearranging? Well, that is exactly what happened to ciburbanity when this coffee table leapt into her car at the Restore. But it is a pretty great addition so I’d say it was well worth the effort!

My favorite thing about second hand treasure hunting is the amazing people you meet. Cate_stylemutthome met the sweetest man when she went to pick up this unique storage piece: Not only did he live around the corner from her parents’ house, but he actually had the original 1903 patent for these drawers from when he worked in the US patent office. And he had TWO (the post only implied that he had one for sale). She snapped them up and has a great story to boot.

Love how a few thrifted goodies like these from Danamoss add character to simple space. Little additions can sometimes make the biggest impact.

Thrift Score Thursday – Making Changes

It has been almost two years since I first guest hosted #ThriftScoreThursday and close to a year since I joined as a host. In that time I have been amazed by the fabulous finds of our TST followers week after week. Heck, I’ve been pretty amazed by some of my own finds. Last week the TST hosts and I did a lot of brain storming on how to make TST even better as we move forward. So before we discuss what’s new I thought it would be fun to look back at some of the old! Above is a gallery of my finds and below is a gallery of some of yours.

Pretty amazing stuff right? Well lets talk about how we’ll be sharing all this amazing stuff in the future!

thrift-score-thursday-square-badge-new361

  • We are moving to a monthly features format.  To be quite honest, it’s a lot to prepare a blog post each week and get all the features on Instagram.  We also want to focus on those finds that are extra special AND beautifully staged and styled in your home.  We want see beautiful photos of how you are using your thrift finds and making them lovely.
  • You can still keep up with the hashtag on Instagram each week, and each host will be sharing a favorite feature there each Thursday.
  • Our first monthly feature post will be 12/1 with the new format kicking off then. (So November is basically a break).
  • AND in that first post in December there will be a fabulous surprise… thrifted giveaway! My co-host and I will be doing the hunting but you guys will be winning.

One thing I want to also mention is that Corinna of A Designer at Home will not be continuing as a host, but not to fear… it’s all amicable and we’re all still friends!  We all just need to do what’s personally best for ourselves.

I’m excited to see where these new changes take us and as always love sharing in one of my favorite passions with like-minded people.

Speaking of like-minded people,  be sure to stop over and see what Brynne and Cassie have to say about our new direction.

Swap It Like It’s Hot – Desk Decor

dsc02240

Today I am participating in fun thrift flip project that is right up myalley!! This fun party is called  Swap it Like It’s Hot, and that is just what it is. A group of bloggers get together and find random items at the thrift store which we swap. It’s up to the new owner to transform the thrift score however they choose!  The deal is we have no idea what we will be transforming until it arrives in the mail. If you are stopping over from I Am a Homemaker then you already know how the game works so welcome!

swapitlikesitshot-2Now let’s see what Jillian sent me…

dsc02101

A little wood taxidermy deer, a milk jug, a block desk calendar, and a brass jello mold.

Since the faux taxidermy was pretty cute as is and I wasn’t really sure what to do with the jello mold I decided to update the block calendar and milk jug to use on my desk.

dsc02209

It was really just a matter of a bit of spray paint… I threw in some gold to make it fancy!

dsc02214

and some black letter stickers for the text. I used a chalkboard sticker on the milk jug as a label.

dsc02235

Presto change-o I have a sleek new set to put on my desk for just a couple of bucks.

Thrift Score Thursday No. 133

dsc02187

It’s time again for a little #ThriftScoreThursday fun! I am always in awe of all the amazing finds out there but never surprised. If you are willing to take on the hunt, you will find! For all you hunters who have been loyal #TST followers we love you and want you keep on sharing your finds but we also want to make some changes as we grow.  Next week we are taking a break and doing some brainstorming  on some new ideas to make #ThriftScoreThursday even better. I hope you won’t miss us too much while we are away… But it does give you a little extra time to thrift, right?

Now for my find…

If you stopped by the blog yesterday to see my One Room Challenge plans then you may recognize this week’s find. This amazing chandelier is headed to my laundry room makeover once it get’s a good cleaning. I am so excited to get it hung but first I wanted to share an up close look with you guys.

dsc02188

There is a little independent thrift shop close to my house that I pop in pretty regularly. Not too long ago I stopped in and saw this guy peeking out of a box full of paper shredding.  I pulled it out and got super excited. You guys know by now I have a thing for lighting so I asked the girl stocking if she knew the price. She commented that the box had been in the back forever and they had just pulled it out trying to get things cleaned up but she didn’t know the price. I held my breath while she asked because this beauty was so nice and I knew that similar (not as nice) one’s from Pottery Barn cost $550. When the price they gave was $10 I was sold.

dsc02189

When I got home I went through the paper shreds and checked all the prism and was only three short. Luckily I was able to buy a few replacements online for less than $10 and now my chandelier is whole again and ready for action.

dsc02193

Into the laundry room she goes!

jmwearing found this large abstract oil painting at a thrift store which is amazing but I also love that she shares that everything else was thrifted too, minus  the plant. She also added this thrifting tip – “always look for great coffee table books at thrift stores! I buy all of mine there and they are amazing ( and inexpensive) additions to your home.”My kind of girl!

dsc02151

Happy #ThriftScoreThursday everyone. always my favorite day of the week especially when I have an addition to one of my favorite collections to share. I kind of had to laugh when I found this one because the tag said “two frames $5” not even a mention of the paint by number I was dying to have. Of course, I am not one to frown at a bargain so I took the good with the bad and accepted the empty frame as part of the deal.

dsc02155

Unfortunately, the empty frame tells me these guys were part of a pair so the hunt will be on for their lost friends. The upside, if I ever manage to find them I already have the frame!

dsc02153

My other find this week was this little octagon planter that just so happens to look super cute with my paint by number and looks fabulous with a few succulents. (I’m not one for fake plants but I admit these are not real. Sorry but I kill them every time. I gave up!

Thrift Score Thursday No. 131

dsc02140

Happy #ThriftScoreThursday guys, I know I’m usually sharing a thrift store makeover but this week’s find is more about the story.

This weekend was our neighborhood yard sale so I went to a whole slew of sales just a block or two from my house.  I made a loop around the neighborhood scoring a few things here and there with one last stop just a few houses down from mine.  I spied some pretty greenery from the street but couldn’t tell if it was artificial or not since it was on the table with the some obviously silk flowers. If you don’t already know, yard sales are a great place to get big beautiful house plants especially in communities like ours where there are a lot of military families constantly on the move. I was pleased to see, when I got up close, that the plant was real, super lush and only $8. SOLD

But that’s not the end of the story. The lady selling this beauty was an older lady. Like us, they had moved around a lot and the plant had gone along for the ride. (I can’t tell you how many times I’ve driven cross-country with a car load of house plants.) She told me this plant was originally from New York and she had been propagating it for 40 years. 40 YEARS! Holy cow, no pressure! Now I feel a deep responsibility to keeping this plant alive another 40 years. Hope I can live of to my neighbor’s green thumb….

dsc02142

Wish me luck guys!

We want to see your good deals, wacky finds and true treasures.

You can share your finds any day of the week but features are shared on our blogs and Instagram on Thursdays, but we’re all checking in on (and using!) the hashtag all week-long. So, when you see/find it, feel free to share it! And we love it when you tag your friends to play along, too!

Each week Cassie from Cassie Bustamante, Corinna from A Designer At Home, Brynne from The Gathered Home, myself and occasionally a guest-host will pick a few favorite thrift scores to feature on our blogs! Please note that by linking up with #ThriftScoreThursday, you are giving us permission to share your finds via social media or on our blogs.

Pretty jealous that shop_echo stumbled upon this beautiful pouf and alpaca rug at the flea. I wish I would run across a few of these!

golddustgoods always finds some great goodies but I have to agree that this 1930’s airline bar cart takes the cake on retro-cool and that sleek chair ain’t so bad itself. You got that right!

Thrift Score Thursday No. 130

DSC01982

It’s #ThriftScoreThursday and time rock those thrifted goodies. This week I scored a great pair of Dixie furniture nightstands that with just a little bit of love were ready to go. When I spotted them in the thrift store they were sitting on the floor and looked like this.

DSC01955

I thought to myself those would be great with tapered legs added to them and as I checked the drawers to see if they were in good shape look what I found!

Only problem is the legs were two different lengths not a great look for a pair of nightstands and the tops had seen better days.

So I decided on a coat of white paint for the boxes only and did a little surgery on four of the legs cutting them off to match the other set.

Once it all came back together they made a perfect pair.

thisatticvintage couldn’t pass up this kitty cat cookie jar… It was missing the lid, but look what a nifty planter it makes. I love when people come up with creative new uses for found objects so they can live another life.

I love everything about this thrifty room from found_phoenix_restoration especially the mint condition Skovby Denmark teak table and J. L. Moller chairs. Great combination!

jmwearing found this mcm recliner beside a dumpster at her local thrift store. She had to convince the manager to let her buy them even though they believed them unfit for sale because they had ripped cushions. I need to find this thrift store, sounds like they have some high standards!

Thrift Score Thursday No.129

DSC01920

Happy #ThriftScoreThursday guys! This week I finished a project I wanted to share but also tell the story of a lesson learned (again!) Spoiler alert, it has a happy ending but still is a valuable lesson to share.

I ran across a yard sale not too long ago and spotted this little table from the street so I decided to stop and check it out. It was sitting in the grass and seemed stable with no deep scratches, I did notice one of the legs was loose but nothing a little glue wouldn’t fix so I snatched it up for just $10.

When I got the little guy home I notice something I should have noticed at the yard sale. One of the feet was broken off and the opposite had been sawed off to match. I honestly don’t know how I missed this since I did notice one of the legs needed gluing…but I did. So after a bit of pondering, I decided all the legs needed to come off and be cut to match and then reglued. Fortunately, there was enough leg left to make this work and the table to still be stable.

DSC01930

This story turned out okay in the end because after giving the whole table a coat of paint you couldn’t even tell the legs had been a problem. The downside was the project took a lot more time than I had intended and when it is something I am planning to re-sell, time is money.  It was also a reminder to me that sometimes you come home with a “bargain” that can’t be fixed.

Public Service Announcement: Check your thrift finds thoroughly because sometimes they are a bargain for a reason and sometimes that reason cannot be fixed. Happy hunting!

I always think of unicorns as one of the thrifting gods so I’m kind of jealous that triciabearmccrory’s husband scored her this needlepoint lucky charm. What a good husband!

My house (including the garage and attic) is full of vintage lighting so when golddustgoods shared this beauty I swooned a little. I need one of these in my collection, the colored glass is absolutely fabulous!

This blue velvet sofa is one of claire_de_loom_et_plume’s favorite Craigslist purchases ever. You know I’m always in for a blue velvet sofa so why doesn’t my Craiglist ever have a beauty like this?
