Thrift Score Thursday No. 131

dsc02140

Happy #ThriftScoreThursday guys, I know I’m usually sharing a thrift store makeover but this week’s find is more about the story.

This weekend was our neighborhood yard sale so I went to a whole slew of sales just a block or two from my house.  I made a loop around the neighborhood scoring a few things here and there with one last stop just a few houses down from mine.  I spied some pretty greenery from the street but couldn’t tell if it was artificial or not since it was on the table with the some obviously silk flowers. If you don’t already know, yard sales are a great place to get big beautiful house plants especially in communities like ours where there are a lot of military families constantly on the move. I was pleased to see, when I got up close, that the plant was real, super lush and only $8. SOLD

But that’s not the end of the story. The lady selling this beauty was an older lady. Like us, they had moved around a lot and the plant had gone along for the ride. (I can’t tell you how many times I’ve driven cross-country with a car load of house plants.) She told me this plant was originally from New York and she had been propagating it for 40 years. 40 YEARS! Holy cow, no pressure! Now I feel a deep responsibility to keeping this plant alive another 40 years. Hope I can live of to my neighbor’s green thumb….

But first, for the newcomers let me explain just what #ThriftScoreThursday is. We want you to participate! Hit up your local thrift stores, craigslist, yard sales, estate sales, side of the road, anything! Thrifty doesn’t necessarily mean from a thrift store. We want to see your good deals, wacky finds and true treasures.

You can share your finds any day of the week but features are shared on our blogs and Instagram on Thursdays, but we’re all checking in on (and using!) the hashtag all week-long. So, when you see/find it, feel free to share it! And we love it when you tag your friends to play along, too!

Each week Cassie from Cassie Bustamante, Corinna from A Designer At Home, Brynne from The Gathered Home, myself and occasionally a guest-host will pick a few favorite thrift scores to feature on our blogs! Please note that by linking up with #ThriftScoreThursday, you are giving us permission to share your finds via social media or on our blogs.

My Favorites:

Pretty jealous that shop_echo stumbled upon this beautiful pouf and alpaca rug at the flea. I wish I would run across a few of these!

teranj26 found the perfect pagoda needlepoint for her bathroom in a beautiful gold faux bamboo frame. I can’t get over the colors in this piece, so good!

golddustgoods always finds some great goodies but I have to agree that this 1930’s airline bar cart takes the cake on retro-cool and that sleek chair ain’t so bad itself. You got that right!

  1. oh, wow! you are super brave to take on that plant! Also probably better with plants than I am ;). I would have run away

  2. OMG! I just can’t even believe – 40 years!!! I am beyond impressed, especially as someone who can’t keep a plant alive to save her life. My best was a few months with a potted plant on our porch, but yep, that one bit the dust this summer. But you’ve got this! Here’s to another 40 years for your new plant! 😀

Also, I’m OBSESSED with that pagoda needlepoint! I somehow missed it in the feed. It’s amazing!
