Inspired By DIY: Pottery Barn

DSC01550

It is time for another round of the Inspired by DIY Challenge organized by my good friend Jess of Domicile 37. Each month a great group of bloggers gets together and we find a piece from a store or designer that we find inspiring and create our own version, DIY style. This month’s inspiration is was Pottery Barn so I chose to recreate the Harper Box. At Pottery Barn this little box costs $49 but my version cost about $10 with a lot of paint left over for another project.

Above is Pottery Barn’s version and below is mine. In a few quick steps, I’ll show you how you can make your own.

I started with this little wooden box I found at the thrift store for $2.50 but you can find similar unfinished boxes at the craft store. This guy had a “beautiful” buffalo decal on the top so my first step was to remove that and clean up all the adhesive. I also removed the claps hardware on the front and filled the holes with wood filler for a cleaner look.

After a good sanding I gave the box an all over paint job in glossy orange spray paint. This will be my accent color so any color you like would work here.

The next step was to the tape off the areas that I wanted to remain orange. I used 1″ painters tape and wrapped all the edges covering 1/2″ on all sides.

Then using letter stickers like you would use for scrapbooking  I chose the style of monogram I wanted, the options are endless here don’t be afraid so get creative.

Apply your monogram or even a full name to the top of the box .

Now another all over paint job, this time in glossy white.

Final step is to remove all the masking to reveal your monogram and accent bands.

And here the final results

  1. Your edges are so nice and crisp, and I am a sucker for anything monogrammed. Thanks for sharing and inspiring me to revamp some old wooden boxes I have laying around.

  2. Love this but question: Original had brass hardware and final version not. Was it easy to just remove it and then sand it down. Did you use wood filler for the holes? Very cool idea!

    1. Yes Debbie that is exactly what I did. I skipped that step in the description so I will go back and add it in in case anyone else is wondering. Thanks for pointing it out.
